Project: Chart House, 16 Chart Street – Lead paint removal and surface preparation

Client: Heyne Tillett Steel

Address: 16 Chart Street, London, N1 6DD

Project Manager: Stature London

Duration: Approximately 2 months

Project Overview

Advanced Eco Blast Ltd was engaged to carry out specialist lead paint removal and surface preparation works as part of the refurbishment of Chart House. The project formed part of a wider programme of renovation works across multiple floors of the building, aimed at upgrading and restoring the internal structure while ensuring hazardous materials were safely managed and removed.

Our works focused on the treatment of lead-containing coatings identified on a range of structural and architectural surfaces throughout the building. Given the varied nature of the substrates involved, specialist surface preparation techniques were employed to safely remove hazardous coatings while preserving the integrity of the underlying materials.

Working across four floors, the project required careful planning and coordination to ensure the works were completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental requirements. Following the removal process, exposed steelwork was protected with a primer coating, providing a suitable base for subsequent finishing works as part of the refurbishment programme.

Scope of Works

  • Lead Paint Removal & Surface Preparation: Grit blasting of concrete ceilings, brick walls, steel beams, and structural columns across four floors to remove lead-contaminated paint coatings and prepare surfaces for refurbishment. Specialist removal of lead-based coatings from timber doors and other sensitive surfaces to protect the underlying substrate.
  • Steelwork Protection: Application of a primer coating to prepared steelwork immediately following surface preparation to provide corrosion protection and a suitable substrate for subsequent intumescent fire protection applications.
  • Environmental Management & Waste Control: Establishment of controlled working areas and containment measures to avoid the release of lead-contaminated dust. Implementation of dust control and housekeeping procedures throughout the project. Management, collection, and disposal of hazardous lead-contaminated waste via licensed waste management contractors in accordance with current environmental legislation.

Outcome

The project was completed safely and successfully across all four floors, delivering the effective removal of hazardous lead-based coatings from a range of substrates. The works provided clean, prepared surfaces for the next phase of refurbishment, while the application of protective primer coatings helped protect and preserve the exposed steelwork.
