Project: Façade Cleaning - ODEON Cinema, Holloway Road, London

Client: Swindon Interiors

Address: ODEON Cinema - 419-427 Holloway Road, London N7 6LJ

Duration: Approximately 3 weeks

Project Overview

As part of the refurbishment and maintenance programme of the iconic ODEON Cinema on Holloway Road, we were appointed to undertake the specialist cleaning of the building's external faience tile façades.

The works involved DOFF Steam Cleaning three elevations of decorative faience tiles to remove accumulated atmospheric pollution, biological growth, staining, and surface contaminants while preserving the integrity and appearance of the historic glazed finish. Due to the sensitive nature of the façade materials, a low-pressure steam cleaning process was selected to provide an effective yet non-abrasive cleaning solution.

Located on a busy area in North London, the project required careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption to pedestrians, businesses, and road users while maintaining safe access around the building throughout the works.

Scope of Works

  • DOFF Steam Cleaning of External Faience Tiles: Specialist low-pressure steam cleaning of external faience tile surfaces to remove dirt, pollution staining, and biological growth while protecting the original glazed finish.
  • Façade Cleaning Across Three Elevations: Cleaning works carried out to three external elevations of the building, ensuring a consistent appearance across all visible façade areas.
  • Access and Safety Management: Safe access arrangements implemented to facilitate cleaning works while maintaining public safety within a busy urban environment.
  • Environmental Control Measures: Environmental protection measures were implemented to control runoff, protect surrounding areas, and minimise disruption to neighbouring properties, businesses, and members of the public.
  • Public Interface Management: Careful coordination of works within a high-footfall location to ensure the continued safe movement of pedestrians and maintain access to adjacent premises.

Outcome

The project successfully restored the appearance of the ODEON Cinema's faience tile façades, removing years of surface contamination and enhancing the building's visual presence within the local area. The works were completed safely and efficiently within a busy city environment, with minimal disruption to the public and surrounding businesses.
